Coach Phillips, as I know him, helped shape my life and encouraged my faith. In my time at Cal Berkeley, he poured into me and my teammates challenging us to grow and trust God, even through difficult circumstances. It’s My Time takes what he did for me and makes it available for everyone. I pray it impacts you as much as he influenced me.

It’s My Time really hit home for me. I fully gave my life to Jesus in college playing Quarterback at Florida State University in large part to my Coach Bobby Bowden. I, too, struggled with defining my identity through how I performed on the football field and the lens people saw me through in a high profile position. Christ gave me a new identity—one that is rock solid in Him. God took Josh on a similar journey. It’s My Time is a must-read, and I believe with all of my heart if you walk through this with Josh that Jesus will change your life too!

As someone who has been working in youth and college ministry for over ten years, I know how vital it is for students of all ages to find a place and space, to be honest and forthright about their faith, struggles, anxieties, hopes, and dreams. In It’s My Time, Josh Phillips shares his captivating story with a great sense of transparency, inspiring his readers to do the same. Whether personally at home, in a series at youth group, or in a small group Bible study, this book presents a fantastic opportunity for students to wrestle with the tough questions of life, faith, and the goodness of God in all circumstances. At the end of each chapter, Josh provides the “Red Zone Check,” which consists of a few thought-provoking questions intended as personal journal prompts or small group discussion questions. It’s My Time is a phenomenal resource for student ministers looking for engaging ways to have deep and meaningful conversations with those they are shepherding.

Who doesn’t love a good story? Not just a “mushy, everything works out story,” but a story of resilience, redemption, and reward? It’s My Time is a story that shares the journey of a boy growing into a man, and a man transforming into a leader, and a leader becoming a servant of Jesus Christ. It’s a story that will make readers laugh, hope, fear, shed tears, witness setbacks, and learn how to bounce back. There’s grit and grace. Defeat and victory. At the end of it, it’s a love story between my friend, Josh Phillips, and his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

It’s My Time is a spiritual awakening to God’s redeeming grace. Over a lifetime of determination to succeed in athletic endeavors, Josh’s faith story grew into what it is today. It reached a maturity that echoes Jeremiah 29:13, which promises that we will find God if we seek him with all our heart. No matter where you find yourself in your faith journey, you’ll find this personal story of transformation a refreshment to your soul.

This is a brave book. I’m reminded that even with those we know, we rarely see all that happens behind the curtain, in the parts of the journey that drive the transformation of the heart. Parts of this story reminded me of Rudy or the Kurt Warner story. Others reminded me of some of my favorite character journeys in the Bible, the ones where endurance and humility turn into impact. Josh’s vulnerability and willingness to share some of life’s hardest moments kept me turning the pages until the end.
